PC3: PHASE-COATED PRISMS

A chemical coating applied to the prisms that dramatically enhances resolution and contrast by forcing light waves back into perfect sync. Only of benefit in the complicated light path found in roof-prism binoculars.

Phase-Coating Graphic

As light travels through a roof prism binocular it reflects off the surfaces of the prism. As it does so, the light becomes partly polarized and the light splits into two slightly out-of-phase beams.

Phase coating slightly slows down the short light path half of the incoming light, causing it to once again be in phase with the light that traveled the longer path when the halves are rejoined. With phase-corrected prisms, no colours are reinforced or cancelled, thus giving more accurate colour reproduction. You'll notice greater detail, particularly in darker / shaded areas.
